  • Leafcutter ants (Acromyrmex sp), Costa Rica. These species of tropical, fungus-growing ants are all endemic to South, Central America, Mexico and parts of the southern United States. Next to humans, leafcutter ants form the largest and most complex animal societies on Earth.   • Cockchafer or May bug (Melolontha melolontha), Switzerland. The cockchafer (colloquially called may bug, billy witch or spang beetle) is a European beetle of the genus Melolontha, in the family Scarabaeidae.<br />
Once abundant throughout Europe and a major pest in the periodical years of "mass flight", it had been nearly eradicated in the middle of the 20th century through extensive use of pesticides and has even been locally exterminated in many regions.   • Emperor moth (Saturnia pavonia) LINNAEUS. Saturnia pavonia flies from March to July depending on locality. In southern and western Britain it usually emerges in late April, while in Scotland it typically emerges in mid-late May.. This is primarily a heathland and moorland species, but can be found also in woodlands and scrubby grasslands in certain areas.
