Pacarana (Dinomys branickii), Pucallpa, Peru. Is a rare and slow-moving nocturnal rodent found only in tropical forests of the western Amazon River basin and adjacent foothills of the Andes Mountains from northwestern Venezuela and Colombia to western Bolivia, including the yungas.
The pacarana is the closest living relative of the newly discovered fossil mammal Josephoartigasia monesi, announced as the world's largest known rodent on January 16, 2008. Image by Andres Morya
